Detroit legend Royce 5’9” just released a freestyle to Phresher’s Wait A Minute instrumental, and he isn’t just being lyrical when he raps “I might do a nigga beat for him, give it back to him a lil’ fresher,” as Nickel Nine might’ve just dropped the most lyrical mumble rap trap record ever recorded.
Royce 5’9” has been around since the 90’s, originally signed to Tommy Boy Records in 1998, but is now a veteran of the Shady Records hip-hop empire, and a soldier of the Slaughterhouse infantry.
Royce has been releasing an endless stream of music since he stepped in front of a mic; he’s released six solo LP’s, five collaborative LP’s (including his album with his Detroit brethren, Eminem, Bad Meets Evil, where he rhymes bar for bar with the self-proclaimed Rap God), as well as a dropping a trunk full of mixtapes in between.
On the Wait A Minute Freestyle Royce takes aim at the mumble rap, trap and drill music fad and it’s lack of lyricism, originality and glamorization of drug culture, “we did already heard their best shit, we already heard their message, they on the molly, lean, percocet trip,” and reminds the Twitter “nerds” who are only “rappin’ for attention” not to fall asleep on their keyboards and start online beef with an emcee who’s in this for the culture, not just the spotlight, and to have an impact on hip-hop, like he’s “Murs rappin’ for the Guiness,” (which is a reference to Los Angeles underground OG Murs recently rapping for 24 hours straight on his #BarsForDays challenge last October).
Wait A Minute Freestyle reminds us how versatile Royce 5’9” can be and it also proves that mumble rap, trap, and drill doesn’t necessarily need to fall lyrically flat to be hard hittin’ and hot.
Book of Ryan is the seventh studio LP by Royce 5’9” and is anticipated to be released in 2017, follow up his 2016 album, Layers, which peaked at Number Two on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart.
Until then, here’s another freestyle to add to Royce’s rap resume.
